No smooches among pooches at this doggone wedding
Young masters plan, execute marriage between pets.

FISHERS -- Miles and Jada pledged themselves to each other Friday afternoon, promising to stick together through sickness and in health, from puppy playgrounds to mud puddles.

Miles -- a 1-year-old black Goldendoodle (golden retriever and poodle) -- and his blushing bride Jada -- a 2-year-old black Labrador retriever mixed breed -- became puppy partners during the 2 p.m. ceremony in the Crell family's back yard in Fishers.

Miles' owner Andrew Houser, 9, officiated the ceremony. The guest list included about 10 adults and children as well as several canine pals. After no one barked in objection to the marriage, Miles skipped licking his bride's cold nose and headed straight for the bone-shaped doggie cake.

"The dogs have always played together at the bus stop and on play dates in our backyard," said parent Amy Crell. "The kids thought they needed to be married. They came up with the whole thing."

Crell's daughter Hannah, 10, planned the doggie wedding with help from Andrew, her 7-year-old sister Emma, and Andrew's siblings, Grace, 7, and Rachel, 5. Jacob Crell, 13, helped operate the sound system. The families live two doors apart in the Woods Edge section of Windemere subdivision. The Crells own Jada and the Housers own Miles.

"Ever since Jada met Miles, they've played together," Hannah said. "They like to play fight and they like to kiss each other or lick each other's face. We just thought they should be together."

The children created wedding invitations that they delivered to neighbors and friends and ordered the bone-shaped cake from For The Love of Dogs, A Dog Bakery, where they also found dog-collar charms for the canines to exchange instead of wedding rings.

"We put the charms on the ground and Miles licked one and Jada licked one," Hannah said, explaining how the dogs chose each other's wedding charm.

The children also decorated the Crells' backyard, creating an aisle and rope runner using garden stakes and a red blanket, and constructed an altar by covering a stool with a white sheet. A compact disc with the traditional Wedding March played in the background.

With Jada wearing a white headband with the words "Bride To Be" written on it and Miles in his red bowtie, Hannah, Emma and Grace stood solemnly as Andrew read the puppy vows.

Afterward, the dogs woofed down the cake "in like five seconds," Hannah said, while the humans munched on bone-shaped cookies and puppy chow (chocolate and powder sugar covered cereal mix) and toasted the canines with lemonade.

The dogs planned to "honeymoon" for a day at Puppy Playground in Indianapolis, Amy said.

"I thought it was awesome. It's kept them busy for about two weeks," Amy said. "We just had so much fun talking about it."
